Under 1989, the only legal basis for an abortion was to save the life of the woman.

In April 1989, the Penal Code was amended to permit abortion if a medical practitioner believed (in good faith) that continuing the pregnancy would involve risk to the life of the woman; or injury to her mental or physical health, greater than if the pregnancy was aborted.

Third-party authorization by a medical professional is required and the abortion has to take place within 120 days of gestation.
